2009 Updates and Highlights

October 14 - Hockey pool has started good luck to everyone!
September 30 - James McNeill ('08) led the University of Toronto Blues over the Brock Badgers in an OUA game this week. James hit a three-run homerun as UofT won the game 11-1.
September 28 - Hockey pool fundraiser started!
September 22 - NY Midgets 2010 defeated the new Toronto Mets 16u in exhibition on Tuesday night. Six pitchers held the Mets to a combined three hits. Marlon recorded three outs on six pitches for the save.
September 20 - Congrats to all who made the 2010 team!

September 19 - The 2009 NY Midget season has ended! Check back in October for updated records. Thanks for a good season!
September 19 - Player awards were given out. Congratulations!
September 19 - NY Midgets lost the last game of the season against New Era Gold by a 13-2 score. The tournament semi-finalists had already been determined. Matt had two hits and callup Quinn Cumming hit a homerun.
September 19 - NY Midgets tied against Ottawa Canadians 1-1 on the strength of a solid six innings pitched from Andrew Tsiakos.
September 18 - NY Midgets lost 6-0 to ICBA, the defending champions, in the second game of the Cannon Cup tournament. AJ pitched five innings and gave up only two hits.
September 18 - NY Midgets tied their first game in the Cannon Cup against COBA 18u Allstars with a 2-2 score. A homerun in the 5th put COBA ahead 2-1... but NY tied the game in the 6th after Dean stole second and scored on AJ's single. Only three COBA outs were recorded via groundballs.
September 18 - Andrew T., Andrew M., and Justin N. played in their 50th game this season - breaking the old NY Midget record set by Randy Back in 2006. Jerrome pitched in his 18th game this year - tying the 2006 appearances record co-held by Erik Treble and Chris Gott. Jerrome struck out eight batters and reached 74 strikeouts on the season - breaking his own NY Midget record of 73 strikeouts that he set in 2008.
September 15 - Cannon Cup schedule updated.
September 14 - Brendan pitched into the 5th inning of his debut with Queen's Golden Gaels in a tough 8-6 loss to the York Lions. Good luck this year Brendan!

September 11 - SUNDAY'S TRYOUT START TIME IS CHANGED TO 1:00PM. WE WILL USE BOTH DIAMONDS.
September 10 - Brendan Lynch ('07-'09) made the Queen's Golden Gaels university baseball club. Good job Brendan! Brendan's Gaels play at 1:00pm and 3:00pm this Sunday at familiar Vaughan Grove park against the York Lions.
September 10 - Chris Lee ('09) made the Carleton Ravens university baseball club. Well done Chris! Chris's Ravens play against Justin Simon's McGill Redbirds on September 13th at 12:00pm in Kanata. Good luck boys!
September 8 - Justin Simon ('09) made the McGill Redbirds Varsity baseball team. Nice work Justin! One of Justin's teammates is multiple NY Midget-record holder Steve Hersch ('04-'06).
September 7 - Saturday's tryout time changed to 2:30pm.
September 6 - In the middle of a blazing Sunday afternoon, with Bond Park completely empty of people, dogwalkers, and cars... Thomas defeated AJ and Broidy in a lengthy homerun derby on the Bantam diamond. Thomas received a blue freezie for his victory. In a sign of the times, AJ and Broidy also received freezies for participating.

September 3 - Good luck to Brendan at Queen's University! Brendan ended his three-year NY Midget career by winning the player-voted Team Leader award. Congrats Brendan!
August 31 - Statistics updated. NY Midget pitchers have only given up three extra-base hits in their last 89 innings pitched.

August 30 - OBA tournament results added
August 30 - NY Midgets lost the semi-finals of the OBAs to East York by a 10-8 score in extra innings. The game was extended after a miscall in the bottom of the 7th. Dean pitched four excellent innings in relief of Andrew Z. and Justin N. East York has not entered the Cannon Cup and NY will not meet EY in a 10th matchup this season.
August 29 - AJ and Jerrome combined for another stellar pitching gem and Andrew T had a pinch-hit triple as NY beat Sarnia 5-1 in Round IV of the OBA tournament. NY has a 3-1 record and plays East York (who has a 2-1 record by virtue of a Round III bye) in the final-four of the OBAs at 9:00am at Concord Regional.
August 29 - Jerrome singled past a drawn-in infield in the bottom of the 7th inning to score two runs and lead NY to a 6-5 victory over Hamilton in Round III of the OBAs. Brendan pitched 6 2/3 solid innings. NY moves on to play tonight at 8:30pm against Sarnia.
August 29 - Broidy's single in the bottom of the 6th inning with the bases loaded broke a 3-3 tie in the NY Midgets' game against Brantford. NY won the game 5-3 and moved on play the loser of East York-Hamilton at 3:30pm.
August 28 - NY Midgets lost their first game of the OBAs to Tecumseh - 1-0 in 8 innings. AJ and Jerrome both pitched amazing in a combined effort. NY next plays the loser of Branford-Niagara Falls on Saturday morning at 8:00am.
August 25 - NY Midgets lost the TBA finals 1-0 to East York in 9 innings. NY gave up only one hit and both teams had excellent pitching and played incredible defense.
August 28 - Good luck to Chris at Carleton University in Ottawa! Chris ended his NY Midget season by taking a called third strike on the outside corner, drawing a line in the dirt, and getting thrown out of the game.
August 27 - We've moved next week's practice (w/Minor Midgets) to Tuesday Sept 1st. There will be no baseball activity between Sept 1st and Sept 8th. Schedule updated.
August 25 - OBA tournament schedule and format added.
August 25 - NY Minor Midgets lost their TBA finals 10-0 to East York.
August 23 - East York defeated High Park17 by a 7-0 forfeit after three HP players and three HP coaches were ejected in the 5th and 6th innings. EY was winning 7-1 at the time. NY plays EY (in their eighth matchup of the year) for the TBA Midget 'AA' Championship on Tuesday night at Keelesdale.

August 22 - The NY Midgets advanced to the TBA Midget finals on Tuesday night at Keelesdale - and also advanced to the OBA Midget AA Provincial tournament next weekend in Vaughan.
August 22 - The NY Midgets won both of their playoff games today - 5-1 over Martingrove and 6-2 over East York. Andrew T. pitched a complete-game two-hitter in the first game... and Justin S. pitched a complete-game four-hitter in the second game. AJ reached base in all eight plate appearances. August 22 - Good luck to Justin S. at McGill University in Montreal! Justin ended his NY Midget season with an incredible complete-game victory in a do-or-die playoff game against East York. Justin's outing was even more impressive considering there was a 30-minute weather delay in the 5th inning.
August 19 - York defeated High Park18 by a 4-3 score. High Park17 defeated Martingrove by a 8-7 score. NY plays against Martingrove on Saturday at 1:00pm at Keelesdale. Playoff bracket updated.
August 18 - East York defeated High Park17 by a 6-5 score. Martingrove defeated York by a 2-1 score. NY plays against EY on Wednesday at Keelesdale.

August 17 - Good luck to Justin F. at Emory University in Atlanta! Justin ended his NY Midget season with a pair of doubles and a sliding catch + double-play in the NY Midgets' playoff game against High Park18.
August 17 - NY Midgets won their first playoff game tonight defeating High Park18 by a 11-0 score. Andrew T. pitched his fourth complete game of the year.
August 17 - Congratulations to the Leaside Junior team who won the TBA Junior playoffs today! Former NY Midget players Chris Gott ('05-'06), Steve Hersch ('04-'06), and Nick Lynch ('06-'07) played on the team.
August 16 - All sixteen players attended our final pre-playoff practice - a five-inning intersquad game. Thanks especially to former NY Midget players Robert ('07-'08) and Erik ('05-'07) for coming out to pitch and participate.

August 13 - The NY Midgets defeated the Toronto Mets 16u 3-2. Justin S. pitched five amazing innings and Jerrome pitched two stellar innings in relief - they combined to strike out 10 Mets batters. The Mets were 10-0 in their TBA games this season.
August 9 - 2010 NY Midget tryout dates have been added. Players born in 1992, 1993, and 1994 are eligible for the 2010 NY Midget team.
August 8 - MLB Open Tryout Camp is Thursday August 20th at 10:00am at Connorvale
August 8 - Andrew T. won the NY Midgets annual skills competition - selecting a big bag of chocolate whoppers as his prize. Brendan finished in second place and earned a big bag of jelly beans, and Justin N. finished in third and was given a new pair of socks. Each player was also given three packs of these 1990 baseball cards for participating.
August 6 - Practice times this weekend are Saturday 10:00am and Sunday 11:00am.
August 2 - Game rescheduled vs. Toronto Mets 16u for Thursday August 13th. Standings updated.

August 2 - Jake played in five games in Ohio - and moved ahead of Rob Echlin for the NY Midgets career games played record (129).

July 24 - CABA World Series in two (2) days! Are we ready?
July 24 - In the CABA World Series, the NY Midgets will play three teams from Ohio, as well as teams from Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan.
July 23 - Game tonight is canceled. Practice on Saturday is "rain or shine" and will run until at least 1:00pm and probably longer. Bring expectations sheet.
July 23 - NY Midgets raffled has completed. Thank you to everyone who supported our team by buying raffle tickets. Winners have been notified. Congratulations to Barry N. who won the Leaf tickets. Fundraising page.
July 19 - NY Midgets defeated the EY Juniors 11-5. The game was attended by former NY Midget players Brandon ('07-'08), Jake ('06-'08), Robert ('07-'08), Mike ('07-'08), James ('08), and Chris ('05-'06). Jake broke an NY Midget record by being walked five times.
July 18 - Pictures added from Oshawa tournament
July 18 - With one eye focused on CABA, and the other eye unfocused, the NY Midgets were destroyed by the Toronto Mets on Saturday morning. The Mets banged out 20 hits and limited the NY Midgets to a single run. The NY Midgets matched their longest losing streak of the season (two games) but three veteran reinforcements should provide a stabilizing influence during Sunday's 18u game against the EY Juniors.
July 17 - NY Midgets got blown out by High Park17 in our worst loss in seven years. Matt and Broidy pitched in mop-up duty. The NY Midgets are stumbling to the end of a stretch of 11 games in 12 days and face the unbeaten Toronto Mets (6-0) on Saturday morning.
July 12 - NY Midgets lost in the finals of the Oshawa tournament 2-1 to a tough Thornhill Reds AAA team. AJ pitched another amazing complete game and limited the Reds to four hits. Andrew T (one of only five NY baserunners) scored the only run by walking on base, stealing second, advancing to third on an Andrew Z groundout, and scoring on a Justin S single. Oshawa Results. July 12 - Andrew Z became the first NY Midget this season to play in 30 games.
July 12 - NY Midgets advanced to the finals of the Oshawa tournament by defeating Quinte 3-1. Jerrome pitched one of his best games of the season - allowing only one walk and five hits. Brendan entered the game with the tying run on second with one out - but recorded the final five outs to earn the save and lower his ERA to 0.30. Andrew T's triple to the wall in the 6th inning scored Broidy from first base for the go-ahead run.
July 11 - NY Midgets advanced to the semi-finals of the Oshawa tournament for the 5th consecutive year.
July 11 - Andrew T pitched an amazing complete game 2-hitter in a 1-0 victory over Mississauga North 17u. The score was 0-0 after 6 1/2 innings when rain/hail postponed the game in Bowmanville at 8:00pm. The game was resumed in Pickering at 9:15pm with Robin getting on base and being sacrificed to second by Harrison. With two out and Andrew Z pinch running, Justin N hit an RBI single up the middle to end the marathon day and earn a 1-0 victory.
July 10 - AJ pitched a no-hitter for 6 1/3 innings against Pickering before giving up a double in the first game of the Oshawa tournament. NY won the game 3-1.
July 9 - Thomas pitched five shutout innings, facing only two batters over the minimum, in an 8-3 victory over York. This was the NY Midgets first scheduled 9-inning game of the season. All sixteen players were present - for only the second time this season.
July 5 - Coach Brandon manned first base in his first coaching appearance of the season. His strategies and key coaching tips helped the NY Midgets build an early 11-0 lead in the second game of the double-header. Statistics Standings
July 5 - Harrison had four plate appearances in two games - and was walked three times and hit by pitch - raising his on-base percentage to .414% - the fourth highest on the team
July 5 - Brendan spent the morning in Dublin, Ireland - and the night at the NY Midgets second game of a double-header against High Park17. The NY Midgets won both games - 12-9 and 11-4.
July 4 - The TBA Allstars finished with a 2-3 record in the 3rd annual Toronto Mets tournament. AJ pitched the Allstars' final game - throwing a six-inning complete game shutout - and giving up only three hits and one walk in a 11-0 victory over the Oakville Royals 18u of the PBLO. June 28 - Jake Mooney returned to the NY Midgets 18u to pitch two innings in a game against the Ontario Women. Jake also homered in his first at-bat in more than eight months. Thomas and Andrew T also connected for homeruns before the game was canceled after three innings due to field conditions.

June 28 - As part of the METS tournament, Team Nova Scotia 19u is playing Team Quebec 19u on Wednesday night at Bond. Start time is 7:15pm. This should be a great game to watch on Canada Day!

June 27 - Game added vs. Ontario Women for Sunday June 28th at 1:00pm at Bond. Arrive for 12:00pm and wear blue.
June 27 - Andrew Z and Andrew M took the lead in our season-long fielding competition - with fielding percentages of 868%. Close behind is Justin S with 861%.
June 25 - Saturday practice time changed to 10:00am.
June 25 - North York Midgets 18u banged out fifteen hits but ended up tied 10-10 with the Etobicoke Rangers. Robin finished the game with four hits - one hit away from the NY Midget single game record. In his final at-bat, with a chance to tie the record, Robin was intentionally walked.
June 22 - Game against York start time changed to 6:15 - arrive as close to 5:15 as you can. Start time change to due the City strike - park lights won't come on.

June 19 - After winning the first game of a double-header by a 14-0 score, three of the NY Midgets' top pitchers managed to, amazingly, issue fourteen walks in six innings of the second game - which ended as a 4-3 loss.

June 14 - In his 36th plate appearance of the season, Chris was issued his first walk as an NY Midget.
June 13 - Brendan pitched an amazing seven-inning complete game for a 6-1 victory over Markham - propelling the NY Midgets into the semi-finals of the Ajax tournament.
June 13 - Jamie recorded two RBI against Markham to bring his NY Midget career total to 79 RBI. This total breaks the old NY Midget career RBI record that was shared by Jake Mooney and Garrett Davies.

June 12 - Andrew T pitched an amazing seven-inning complete game for a 6-4 victory over Quinte.

June 11 - We lost 3-1 to East York. Magically, only one walk was issued in the entire game. This baserunner would later score and turn out to be the winning run.
June 10 - Congratulations to Birchmount Park - Chris and Robin's High School team - who won the Prentice Cup OFFSA Championship! Birchmount defeated Pickering 4-2 in the final game at Rogers Centre today.
June 10 - Congratulations to York Mills - Justin N's High School team - who won the Tier 1 City Championships!
June 9 - Chris's key RBI helped his high school team advance to the Prentice Cup final tomorrow at Rogers Centre.
June 9 - Congratulations to Newtonbrook - Andrew T's high school team - who won the Tier 2 North Championship!
June 9 - Jerrome had three doubles and Broidy had three singles in an 8-2 victory over the Team Ontario Women. Standings updated. Statistics will be updated after Thursday's game.
June 9 - Monday's game against the Ontario Women featured the latest chapter in the NY Midgets 'sibling rivalry' games - when Chris batted against his younger sister Tylin. Chris was 0-2 with two flyouts and a hit-by-pitch.
June 9 - In 2006, young Jake Mooney pitched to and batted against his older brother David Mooney (who was a callup for a shorthanded High Park team). In 2008, Mitch Sutton pitched to and batted against his younger brother Sean - who was playing for the Toronto Mets. Earlier this year, Dean Macandog pitched to his younger brother Daniel Macandog in an exhibition game against the NY Minor Midgets.
June 5 - AJ was featured in the Town Crier! Although his high school team lost in the finals, AJ pitched the semi-final game and struck out seventeen (17) batters in a complete-game no-hitter.
June 4 - NY Midgets gave up nine runs in the 7th inning to lose 13-6 against a driven High Park team. Thank you to Daniel H and Mikey from the NY Minor Midget team who filled out our roster for this game.
June 4 - High School results: Andrew Z (lost in Tier 1 South finals), Andrew M (lost in Tier 2 South finals), Justin N (eliminated from OFFSA with 1-2 record), Robin & Chris (advance to Prentice Cup final four). Well done overall!
June 3 - We struck out twelve batters, walked five batters, hit five batters with a pitch, gave up one hit, and made eight errors in a 9-3 loss to York. Our first TBA loss in 2008 was also against York.

May 31 - NY Midgets 11-4 victory over Martingrove was highlighted by over half of the total outs in the game being recorded via strikeout. Justin F. made his NY Midget debut and recorded three RBI. The game was attended by former NY Midget players Jake Mooney ('06-'08) and Mike Forbes ('07-'08).

May 24 - The Woodslee Orioles won the NYBA Minor Midget tournament hosted by NYBA and the NY Midget team. Woodslee defeated Newmarket 8-5 in the finals. Thanks to all the players and parents who volunteered this weekend! NYBA Tournament Results

May 21 - The game against Martingrove is rescheduled for Sunday May 31st starting at 2:00pm. Arrive at 12:30pm for batting practice. Schedule updated.

May 17 - The NY Midgets went 4-0 in the sixteen-team Vaughan tournament before falling in the semi-finals to Etobicoke. The NY Midgets started the year 7-0 and set a new NY Midget record for longest winning streak.

May 10 - The NY Midgets are thrilled to welcome back Brendan Lynch ('07-'08) to the team - ending his early retirement. Brendan marked his return with a batting-practice home run on the main field.
May 10 - Andrew Z., AJ, and Justin S. took the lead in the first event of a season long gold-glove competition - registering fielding percentages of .950%
May 9 - Saturday's practice is canceled due to lightning and hail. We will still practice Sunday at 10:30. Try to arrive early so we can start right away.

Apr 19 - The NY Midgets regretfully announce the unofficial retirement of active NY Midget player Brendan Lynch ('07-'08). An arm injury sustained in the winter will prevent Brendan from starting the season with the Midget team. Brendan threw four complete games last season and he holds the NY Midget record for strikeouts in a game with thirteen (13). Mid-season comeback?
Apr 19 - Tryouts have ended - thanks for everyone for trying out.

Apr 17 - We have moved our METS game to Thursday. However, we still need to come on Monday to get sized for uniforms. Plan to be at the park on Monday sometime between 6:30pm and 8:30pm to get sized.
Apr 16 - Tonight's tryout will be three hours (if the lights come on) because we will take advantage of the nice day.
Apr 13 - Our next three tryouts are Thursday at 6:30pm, Saturday at 10:30am, and Sunday at 10:30am. We'll be making roster decisions over the next three tryouts.
Apr 13 - R. Speaker won the second NY Midgets sports pool fundraiser - nicely done!

Apr 4 - Thanks everyone for coming out today. Unfortunately it was too windy to hold a tryout. We will practice tomorrow at 10:30 - provided there is no rain. Please call my cellphone if you're wondering whether or not to come out.
Apr 2 - Our first outdoor tryout is this Saturday - come out to Bond at 10:30am in the rain, snow, or sunshine.
Apr 2 - NYBA purchased new equipment for the Midget team: a new catcher's glove, a new catcher's mask, new catcher's pads, a new catcher's chest protector, a new helmet, new practice baseballs, and three new bats.
Apr 2 - The Minor Midget tournament we are hosting now has eleven teams entered! There is confirmed interest from one more club - and we'll max out at twelve teams.
Mar 22 - Entered Ajax tournament - June 12-14
Mar 10 - Outdoor tryout schedule posted. We may still add optional indoor workouts in late March.
Mar 10 - The Minor Midget tournament we are hosting now has eight teams entered! There is written interest from a few more clubs and we are looking to max out at twelve teams.
Mar 2 - Congratulations Brandon ('07-'08) - Senior Indoor Field Hockey National Championship Gold Medal in Calgary!
